Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)
MAT is the gold-standard, evidence-based approach for treating opioid and alcohol use disorders. We combine FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapies for the best chance at lasting recovery.
What Is Medication Assisted Treatment?
Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) is a comprehensive approach to treating substance use disorders that combines FDA-approved medications with counseling, behavioral therapy, and peer support. MAT is recognized by the NIH, CDC, SAMHSA, and WHO as the most effective treatment for opioid use disorder.
MAT medications work by normalizing brain chemistry, blocking the euphoric effects of alcohol and opioids, relieving physiological cravings, and stabilizing body functions — allowing clients to engage fully in the therapeutic work of recovery without the constant distraction of withdrawal and craving.
MAT Medications We Use
- Buprenorphine (Suboxone, Subutex) — reduces opioid cravings and withdrawal
- Naltrexone (Vivitrol) — monthly injectable, blocks opioid and alcohol effects
- Naloxone (Narcan) — overdose reversal medication and education provided
- Acamprosate (Campral) — reduces post-acute alcohol withdrawal symptoms
- Disulfiram (Antabuse) — deterrent therapy for alcohol use disorder
Why MAT Works
Reduces Risk of Overdose Death
MAT reduces opioid overdose death by 50% or more. Naloxone education and access is provided to every client and their family.
Improves Treatment Retention
Clients on MAT stay in treatment longer and are more likely to complete their full treatment plan compared to those without MAT.
Allows Focus on Recovery
By managing cravings and withdrawal, MAT frees clients to focus on the psychological and behavioral work of recovery.
MAT Myths vs. Facts
Myth
"MAT just replaces one addiction with another."
Fact
MAT medications are prescribed at therapeutic doses, don't produce a high in stabilized patients, and allow normal functioning — the opposite of active addiction.
Myth
"The goal should be complete abstinence from all medications."
Fact
MAT is no different from using medication to treat any chronic disease. We don't shame people with diabetes for using insulin or people with depression for taking antidepressants.
Myth
"MAT is only for short-term detox."
Fact
Research shows longer-term MAT produces the best outcomes. The duration is individualized based on clinical need, not arbitrary timelines.
Myth
"MAT doesn't require therapy."
Fact
MAT at Connected Recovery Inc. always includes counseling and behavioral therapy. Medication is one tool among many in a comprehensive treatment plan.
